Turnovers Doom Braves on Gridiron

Atlantic City made most of opportunities in the win.

Turnovers and missed opportunities keep football coaches up at night.

The Absegami and Atlantic City game on Sept. 23 turned on turnovers.

The Vikings scored two touchdowns off of Braves turnovers, and Absegami came up empty when it recovered a fumble during Atlantic City's 32-27 win.

Absegami registered what could have been the first momentum-changing play of the game, when it recovered a fumble on the second play of the game.

However, the Braves' drive stalled even though they had five chances inside the 5-yard line to punch one in. Absegami scored on its second possession, but that touchdown only out them up 6-0, instead of two touchdowns.

"We hurt ourselves," Absegami quarterback Rashad Kinlaw said.

"With our offense and the way we run it, we should have capitalized on fourth down," said Absegami running back Tyler Bing, who amassed 236 total yards.

A bad snap and another fumble in the second half by the Braves, gave the Vikings two extra possessions. To their credit the Vikings made the most of those possessions, scoring 13 points off turnovers.

Absegami dropped to 1-2, and will look to get back into the win column at 7 p.m. at home against Vineland.

"We will work real hard in practice to bounce back from this loss and get a win," Kinlaw said.

LET THEM PLAY

Kickoff eventually came Friday night more than an hour late after two lightning delays.

The fans that stuck around saw a wild and entertaining game.

It was apparent that both the Absegami and Atlantic City high school football players were ready to play Friday night.

Both squads warmed up on the gridiron at 6 p.m., and they were loud and loose, seemingly focused on what was an important early-season matchup.

Then lightning struck.

The Absegami athletic staff made sure to clear the stands and the football field until it was safe to return. Kickoff was going to be delayed, but no one expected yet another delay.

Heavy rains fell on the Absegami football field and the sky lit up again. Fans and players headed for shelter again.

Playing the game was in question, especially when word came that the Mainland and Ocean City game was postponed until Monday afternoon. Absegami athletic director Steve Fortis and Atlantic City A.D. Frank Camp walked the field with referee Larry Bloom, and they made the call to play Friday night, and it was the right call.

BIG DAY BY BING

Tyler Bing rushed for 124 yards on eight carries, and caught four passes for 112 yards.

The Braves running back is known for his big plays, and caught two touchdowns, including one from 65 yards. He also had an 87-yard run, but was caught from behind.

"If my show didn't come off, I would have scored," Bing said.
