About 50 Syringes Wash Up on LBI

Heavy rains blamed for stirring up trash, eel grass found from Ship Bottom to Barnegat Light

Updated 7:30 p.m.: According to Larry Hajna, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, about 50 syringes were among the debris that crews cleaned up from the beaches in Long Beach Island today.

An examination of the syringes confirmed they were washed from storm drains, Hajna said.

The syringes were part of a lengthy washup of eel grass and trash along the beaches from Barnegat Light all the way to Ship Bottom, Hajna said.

"This happens from time to time after a heavy rain, like we had on Wednesday," he said earlier in the afternoon.

Beaches, which reportedly were closed while the debris was removed, were expected to reopen Sunday.

Earlier: Crews are headed out to the beaches on Long Beach Island to clean up trash, including used syringes, that has washed up there today, according to the DEP.

Larry Hajna, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, confirmed that debris has washed up on the beaches from Barnegat Light all the way south to Ship Bottom, and that the debris included "some syringes."

"This happens from time to time after a heavy rain, like we had on Wednesday," Hajna said, adding that eel grass was the primary item that washed up.

Local crews were being mobilized to clean up the debris.

IF THE SOOONAMI BROUGHT DEBRIS FROM JAPAN TO OREGON, SURELY OFF SHORE NYC DUMPING CAN REACH OR ISLAND ... WE NEED "GARBAGE IN ASH OUT" FACILITIES ALL ALONG THE COAST. GARBAGE THAT IS DUMPED IN NO WAY IS SUITABLE FOR SEA-LIFE OR WE COASTAL RESIDENTS ... CAN YOU IMAGINE THE AMOUNT OF GARBAGE DUMPED OFF-SHORE???

Henry -- We contacted DEP when we heard beaches were being closed. And from what I recall, the mayor in Jaws was proven quite wrong shortly into the film ;)

Hey Sal, I'm an LBI'er from way back now LIVING in Oregon, and yes, crap from the Tsunami is definitely washing up... extremely large floating docks and such, no syringes as of yet. ;-) But what I really wanted to say was compared to the beaches in Loveladies where I spent every day of my summer from about 1966 to 1979, during my visit to LBI in 2010 I was pleasantly surprised by the CLEAN beaches! (this time in Brighton Beach) I saw virtually NO debris or medical waste or even litter for the most part. Heck, it could've been a beach in Oregon (where they're normally meticulous)... except it wasn't--it was my favorite place on earth: Long Beach Island, where the sand is warm, as is the beach, and the water is a perfect temp! (Can you tell I miss it?) LBI'ers, please know what you have there... sure Oregon is beautiful, but the water is freeeekin' cold and the beaches are full of huge rocks, cliffs and huge logs. Enjoy LBI for me this summer!
