Several Go Green Galloway Committees Still Seeking Help

Galloway residents urged to put their green talents to use on 11 available committees.

Barbara Fiedler, co-chair of Go Green Galloway, urges Galloway Township residents to consider joining the team to help the community work toward goals that will be rewarding for generations to come.

Consisting of township employees, business representatives, citizens and people from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey community, Go Green Galloway is part of the Sustainable Jersey effort that certifies communities on the basis of meeting specific criteria.

Sixty-eight New Jersey cities and towns, approximately one-eighth of the total of 566 communities, are now part of the program. Galloway is one of only four communities to achieve Silver Certification recognition for its work on behalf of a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

“People who wish to volunteer may give as much or as little of their time as they are able, but it would be good if they have knowledge of the work experience and background required to serve on a specific committee,” Fiedler said. “It also helps to be committed to a sustainable Galloway.”

Recent Go Green Galloway events have included the shredding event at the municipal complex, in which Galloway residents were invited to bring their documents to be shredded while learning more about what they can do to save the environment.

Prior to that, Go Green Galloway sponsored a “Bag It” event, in which volunteers stood outside local supermarkets and handed out reusable bags to customers entering the stores. That event proved a resounding success, as volunteers in front of participating supermarkets quickly ran out of bags in the morning, rendering the need for afternoon volunteers unnecessary.

The general goal of Sustainable Jersey, Go Green Galloway, and similar programs around the nation is to promote conservation and energy efficiency through environmental education and the implementation of sustainable practices in order to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the quality of life in both the short and long-term.

Volunteers will be joining others who have done good work in striving to make Galloway Township a great place to work and live. Those who wish to join with Go Green Galloway may call Fiedler at 609-652-8657, ext. 10 during regular Galloway Township municipal hours of operation, or you can email her at bfriedler@gallowaytwp-nj.gov
