South Jersey Man's Dreams Sank with the Titanic

Self-made South Jersey man Frederick Sutton died in the sinking of the Titanic, which went down 100 years ago April 15.

One hundred years ago, the unthinkable news began reaching New Jersey: The “unsinkable” Titanic met with disaster, sinking in the freezing Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage. In Haddonfield, one family anxiously waited with increasing panic before confirming the worst news possible. Family patriarch Frederick Sutton, a self-made man who rose to the top of local business and society circles, perished in the April 15, 1912, sinking. Sutton was the only New Jerseyan passenger from south of Trenton aboard Titanic. In many ways, Sutton was the embodiment of the American story. An immigrant from Suffolk County, England, Sutton arrived in Philadelphia essentially penniless in 1870, determined to make a name and career for himself in America. “He…

Yes, he came here LEGALLY with NOTHING: " An immigrant from Suffolk County, England, Sutton arrived in Philadelphia essentially penniless in 1870, determined to make a name and career for himself in America." Today SUCCESS is SHUNNED! "Sutton made his fortune as a coffee importer in his own firm, Sutton & Van Sant, and as president of Collingswood National Bank. Family, Friends and Community Come Together at Collins Road Vigil

About 60 people gathered to recall Marcus Daley, an 11-year old fifth grader killed a week ago on Collins Avenue at Colonial Court.

Even with their candles lighted, it was difficult to make out a procession of mourners as they headed to Collins Road at the intersection of Colonial Court. They walked on the shoulder of Collins Road as they approached because there are no sidewalks and no marked crosswalks over Collins. On one side of Collins sits Mattix Run. On the opposite, Society Hill at Galloway II. Marcus Daley died last Sunday night at 6:07 p.m., crossing darkened Collins Road between the two townhome developments. A small memorial left at the base of a utility pole and another smaller memorial placed exactly on the place on Collins Avenue where the Roland Rogers Elementary School student was struck and killed grew as mourners added candles, flashlights, flowers …

Elvis Performer, Ted Prior, Dead of Cancer

"It is with deep sorrow I report my friend and local legendary entertainer Ted Prior took his final curtain call today," Neil Regina announced on Prior's Facebook page about 8:15 a.m.

Ted Prior, Elvis-inspired performer extraordinaire and beloved regular entertainer at many local events, died this morning after battling brain cancer, according to his manager. "It is with deep sorrow I report my friend and local legendary entertainer Ted Prior took his final curtain call today," Neil Regina announced on Prior's Facebook page about 8:15 a.m. "The stars in heaven will be much brighter and the music in rock 'n' roll heaven will be much sweeter with him in lead vocal." In an interview with Patch in December, Prior discussed how disappointed he was to have to miss the city's First Night celebration. He said it was—amazingly—the first time he had canceled an appearance in his nearly 50 years in show business. In that interview…

I am sooo saddened by this news. I met Ted at The Flanders Hotel back when I was working there. He'd performed in Ocean City so very many times, and is well loved, and will be much, much sadly missed. A true trooper, always a gentleman and one of the finest Elvis' I've ever seen! Rest in Peace Ted. God bless and comfort his family. xo Gloria   more ›

Jack Watson Did More Than Volunteer; He Broke New Ground

Watson, 78, of Point Beach, who died Feb. 28, was the Point Boro Key Club advisor, and helped set up recycling in the area

Jack Watson never wanted anything to be merely ordinary - even if it was an ordinary old school club. When he took over the Key Club at Point Boro High School some 40 years ago, he wanted it to do more than hold cake sales or roll cotton candy at the Seafood Fest. Watson was known to be modest, so he would never put down anybody who did the car washes and the tricky-trays. It's just that, well, Jack, always wanted more. Watson, 78, who died Feb. 28 at his Point Beach home, helped turn the Point Boro Key Club - which was affiliated with the Kiwanis organization - into one of the most successful in the country. This Key Club did more than raise money - and it raised a lot. The Key Club helped set up one of the state's first regularly …
