Absegami Seniors Have Chance to Leave Mark on Softball Program

Becca Maguire and Julia Pietropola are the only two seniors on a rebuilding Braves program.

Absegami High School senior Becca Maguire has already set the school record for career home runs with 12 and is pursuing the career hits record, which currently stands at 105. However, records are not the only marks Maguire hopes to leave on the Braves’ softball program. Maguire is one of two seniors on this year’s team, along with Julia Pietropola. The shortstop has played four years of varsity softball, and been an integral part of the Braves’ 39-14 record over the last two years. She understands this season won’t be as successful as previous years have been, if for no other reason than the team’s extreme youth combined with a tough schedule. However, she and Pietropola understand their roles in helping the Braves maintain the standard …

Rutgers University Fires Embattled Basketball Coach Mike Rice

Athletic Director Tim Pernetti has confirmed that Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice has lost his job.

After less than a day of deflecting a storm of bad press surrounding head basketball coach Mike Rice's coaching methods, Rutgers University Athletic Director Tim Pernetti has confirmed that Rice has been fired. According to a report on NJ.com, Pernetti issued the following statement on Wednesday: "I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice," Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said in a statement. "Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community." On Tuesday, a video surfaced of Rice yelling offensive language and shoving and kicking …

As a graduate of Rutgers (Class of 77) I find it more deplorable that the President and AD caved in to media pressure. As much as I may find Rice's behavior disturbing, don't dare compare this to Jerry Sandusky. Bobby Knight maybe, but not Sandusky. What's more, had Rice been more successful with the men's basketball program, do you really think he'd have been as expendable? Had Rutgers been good…   more ›

No. 1 Montclair State defeated the Ospreys by scores of 1-0 and 2-0 on Saturday.

Three days after losing its first game of the season, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey softball team went toe-to-toe with the top team in the country, but ultimately lost a pair of close games. Montclair State, ranked No. 1 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, shutout the Ospreys by scores of 1-0 and 2-0 on Saturday, March 30, according to Stockton's website. Ospreys pitchers Michelle Pietrocola and Brittany Ksiezopolski have combined to help Stockton start the season strong, winning 13 of their first 14 games, including a no-hitter by each pitcher. However, on Saturday, they went up against an all-American pitcher in Alex Hill, who threw both games for Montclair, including a one-hitter in the first game. Hill silenced …

Stockton Bats Come Alive Late as Ospreys Split Doubleheader

Stockton immediately avenged its first loss of the season with a 5-4 win over St. Joseph's College of Long Island.

For 13 innings on Thursday, March 28, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey softball team didn’t produce much offensively. First, the Ospreys lost their first game of the season. Then, they found themselves down by three runs heading into the final inning of a double header against St. Joseph’s College of Long Island. In an instant, the Ospreys’ offensive woes were a distant memory. Freshman Nichole Tomo led off the inning with a solo home run, her second of the season, igniting an offense four more hits in the inning, including a pair of doubles, and a game-winning RBI single by freshman Dominique Dorris, lifting Stockton to a 5-4 win. “Hitting’s contagious, and once one person got on, everyone started to hit,” Dorris said. Dorris …

Stockton Pitchers Continue Strong Season Despite Team's First Loss

The two pitchers have a pair of no-hitters this season.

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey softball team has used a lethal 1-2 pitching combination to start the season strong. Both Michelle Pietrocola and Brittany Ksiezopolski have each pitched a no-hitter this year, and the Ospreys have pitched seven shutouts, with three more games where the opposition was limited to one run. Outside of two innings on Thursday, March 28, it was more of the same. Despite the Ospreys dropping their first game of the season to St. Joseph’s College of Long Island, Ksiezopolski pitched brilliantly, striking out 10 batters and allowing four hits. She kept the Golden Eagles off the board until the final frame, when an unlikely two-run homer put the brakes on Stockton’s unbeaten campaign. After a 20-minute …

New Artificial Reef to be Built off Ocean County For Recreational Anglers Only

Christie administration announces compromise on 'pots off the reefs' issue; new reef to be built off Ocean County

The state will build a new artificial reef off Ocean County that will provide fishing grounds solely for recreational anglers. In a move that Gov. Chris Christie's administration hopes will mark the end of a long feud between commercial fishermen and recreational anglers, commercial boats will continue to be allowed to fish on two reefs in state waters while the new reef – which will be built north of Barnegat Inlet – will be reserved for the recreational sector. For years, recreational anglers have pushed for laws to be created that would ban commercial fishermen from utilizing the state's inshore reefs, which were paid for through excise taxes on recreational fishing equipment. They have argued that their tax dollars went to fund the …

Stockton Lacrosse Team Lets Early Lead Slip Away in Loss to Albright

The Ospreys dropped a 23-10 decision to the Lions on Wednesday.

Things looked good for the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey men’s lacrosse team early Wednesday night, March 20. The Ospreys held two separate three-goal leads on Albright College in the first quarter of their matchup on Stockton’s campus in Galloway. The second quarter was a different story, however, as the Lions tied the game twice. They then wiped away the deficit with five goals in the final two minutes of the first half. Albright pulled away in the second half for a 23-10 win. “Once they started to put it in the goal, we lost confidence and we can’t let that happen,” Stockton coach Kevin Zulauf said. “We let it get away from us. This is a very good team we lost to.” Albright improved to 5-1 on the season, with the Lions’ only …
