Fallen N.J. Officers Remembered at Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

Two officers died in the line of duty over the past year in New Jersey

The two New Jersey law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty over the past year were remembered Tuesday as courageous men who served their state proudly. Millville Police Patrolman Christopher Reeves, killed July 8, 2012 when his patrol car was rammed by a driver fleeing authorities, and New Jersey State Police Detective Sgt. James G. Hoopes, who died of a heart attack during training, were added to the list of the 467 New Jersey officers who have died in the line of duty since 1854. An indictment in the Reeves case was handed up May 8, the South Jersey Times reported. The annual memorial service, held at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, includes a ceremonial roll call of fallen officers and a 21 gun salute. The West …

Prince Harry Views Destruction, Walks The Boardwalk During Shore Visit

Harry, Christie survey the damage and have some fun

JERSEY SHORE -- Britain's Prince Harry did what most people would do on a sunny, spring day in Seaside Heights—take in the ocean views, then play some boardwalk games. Harry came to Seaside Heights with Gov. Chris Christie Tuesday morning after the two toured destruction caused by Superstorm Sandy in Mantoloking. The pair drove south on Route 35 and entered the boardwalk at Grant Avenue where crowds of people were waiting for their arrival. "Prince Harry, we love you," shouted one small girl who was holding a welcome sign. Standing next to her was an Elvis Presley impersonator, hoping to attract some attention of his own from the prince. Harry and Christie were greeted by local officials, who escorted the pair out to Casino Pier, the site …

I respect the Prince for his military service and his work with charities. However, he tours the shore area which probably cost the Shore Towns/State tens of thousands in OT for police etc. Goes to CT the next day and makes millions from US companies for his international charities at a Polo match. Then heads back to the UK the same day. Where is there an upside for his shore visit? I would have …   more ›

Christie Underwent Weight Loss Surgery In February

Governor tells New York Post that Lap-Band procedure was done at the urging of his family. An NYU doctor made house calls to Christie's Mendham home to not draw attention to the surgery.

Gov. Chris Christie underwent stomach-shrinking Lap-Band surgery in February, he confirmed to the New York Post on Monday night while refuting speculation that he was slimming down for a White House run in 2016.    Christie quietly had the Lap-Band -- or laparoscopic adjustable gastric binding -- procedure done in a New York hospital, telling the paper that he agreed to the surgery at the urging of his family after turning 50 in September. The governor insisted that the Lap-Band was not inserted to help him lose weight in the run-up to 2016. "I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary Pat and the kids and going, 'I have to do this for them, even if I don’t …

And I not only salute your service, I am in awe of someone of your mettle that could do that service. It is easy to point fingers at whoever. I just get pissed when I watch anyone trying to give Bush and Cheney a "pass" on sending our kids into a trumped up bullshit UNILATERAL attack. Just ask Colin Powell what the TRUTH is. Christie: Don't Wait to Elevate, Rebuild; Grant Money on the Way

Governor: Don't listen to 'dopes' saying to hold off

Gov. Chris Christie took a stand this week against public officials and community leaders calling on residents to wait for potential changes to Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps before elevating or rebuilding their homes in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Christie, speaking in Lavallette Tuesday, said the state's adoption of FEMA's advisory base flood elevation maps last month will ensure residents build smarter and stronger, and avoid the consequences that came in Sandy's storm surge. "Fight away, I'm fighting too, but don't tell people not to rebuild their homes if they want to," said Christie. "Don't we want people in safer homes and more resilient homes?" Some have called on residents to wait for FEMA to put out revised, …

Gov. Christie on Letterman; Two Celebs Join Sandy Relief Board

'We will see you on the boardwalk,' says Brian Williams, news anchor and Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund new board member.

As a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman Monday night, Gov. Chris Christie's witty banter and doughnut-eating may have made headlines, but he was quick to remind everyone that Hurricane Sandy relief is still needed. Christie and Letterman talked about the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund started by first lady Mary Pat Christie. She announced today that two major celebrities have joined the honorary advisory board. Bono, front man of U2, and NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams will join Bruce Springsteen, former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley, Jon Bon Jovi and others on the board. Bono called it “an honor” to support the relief efforts. “Sandy took away just about every piece of my Jersey Shore childhood,” said Williams, who is from …

Christie: Strong Dunes Save Lives, Rebuilding Them Will Employ New Jerseyans

Christie Visit to Bradley Beach focuses on importance of dunes, employment grants

With the whir of front loaders and bulldozers pushing sand on the beachfront behind him, Gov. Chris Christie today pointed to rebuilding an aggressive dune system as perhaps the most important step in restoring and safeguarding tourism, property and residents' lives along the Jersey Shore. After surveying the rebuilding of dunes flattened by Hurricane Sandy, Christie outlined how state grants for post-disaster employment needs were directly rebuilding the beachfront of Bradley Beach. Here, 12 workers were the beneficiaries of the National Emergency Grant, secured in the days following Hurricane Sandy. Christie said the grants had put 428 to work in 11 hurricane-ravaged towns statewide, with 658 more to be employed through state Department …

Governor: 'Hearts and Prayers' Are With People of Connecticut

Christie comments on school shooting at Sea Bright news conference

Gov. Chris Christie said Friday that the people of Connecticut are struggling with an "unthinkable tragedy" after the mass shooting that left at least 25 people dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. "The people of the state of Connecticut have endured today just an unspeakable tragedy," Christie said at a news conference in Sea Bright. "Our hearts and prayers go out to Gov. (Dan) Malloy and to the families of each of those victims," he said. Multiple news outlets are reporting the shooter as Adam Lanza, who killed 18 students in the second deadliest school shooting in American history. His brother, Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, was initially erroneously named as the culprit. "I want the folks in Connecticut to know that all the folks …

Christie: Supporting Businesses Crucial to New Jersey's Recovery

Governor convenes Business Impact Assessment Group to survey merchants' needs after Sandy

Statewide business groups will begin this weekend to survey the needs of local merchants seeking to recover and rebuild after superstorm Sandy, Gov. Chris Christie said Friday afternoon. The formation of the Business Impact Assessment group was announced at a news conference at the Sea Bright firehouse, which until recently had served as a "Food City" center for provisions for the local responders and residents in this devastated oceanfront community. Local and state officials joined residents to hear the governor describe the value of small businesses, especially those at the Shore. "The heartbeat of the economy and the fabric of the culture are all these small businesses," he said. Small businesses are the "backbone of the Garden State …

Christie to Seek Re-Election

Chris Christie announced he would seek a second term as New Jersey governor.

Gov. Chris Christie will seek a second term as New Jersey's governor. He made the announcement during an appearance at a press conference at the Port Monmouth Fire Dept. Monday afternoon. Christie declined to talk in detail about his bid, saying he is saving that for a more formal announcement in January.  But he did say he sought the advice of his wife, Mary Pat, and four children, over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, and got their blessing.  "I have a job to finish that I would have never anticipated to have six weeks ago," said Christie. He said loved the Garden State. "I want to leave it better than I found it when I'm done."  The gubernatorial election will take place in November 2013. In response to a question about whether he would …

Christie in Toms River: 'We Have to Take a Moment to Give Thanks'

Governor at Lowe's store where meals are being given out to families

Gov. Christie visited the Lowe's Home Improvement store in Toms River Wednesday morning, kicking off the state's "Season of Service" campaign in one of the communities most affected by Superstorm Sandy. Christie joined local officials, including Rep. Jon Runyan (R-3), and Lowe's executives at the Hooper Avenue store, where employees were helping distribute enough Thanksgiving meals to feed 3,000 people. The Season of Service is a volunteer initiative encouraged by the Christie administration, aimed at encouraging the end of the year as a time to give back. The meals, provided by Boston Market, came in the form of 500 bags enough to feed six people each. "We want to be here and see people on this holiday," said Christie. "It's important for…
