An unattached garage was completely destroyed following a fire behind a West Herschel Street residence Monday evening, April 8. No one was injured during the fire, including the volunteer firefighters who responded to the scene, Galloway Fire Marshal Ron Garbutt said. The homeowner may have suffered minor burns, but wasn't going to be escorted to the hospital, Garbutt said. According to Garbutt, the fire was started when the homeowner was grinding metal outside the structure. A spark off the grinder struck two gas cans located in the garage, which then exploded. A Galloway man was driving down the White Horse Pike Monday afternoon, March 4, when he noticed the smell of smoke. He pulled into the CVS parking lot, and moments later, the car was fully engulfed in flames. About a dozen volunteer firefighters from Germania and Pomona reported to the scene of the car fire around 2:15 p.m., and within 10-15 minutes, the blaze was extinguished, according to Fire Marshal Ron Garbutt. "The passenger side was fully involved," Garbutt said. "The wind direction stopped the building from becoming fully involved." No part of the store was damaged. Galloway volunteer firefighters contained a fire with flames that were an estimated 30-feet high in a heavily wooded section of the township on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 21. Volunteer firefighters from Germania and Pomona reported to the scene of a fire on North Prague Avenue in the Germania section of the township at 12:17 p.m. Firefighters contained the fire within 10 minutes. No people suffered injuries, according to Fire Marshal Ron Garbutt. According to Garbutt, the fire started in a storage shed in the back of a residence. One victim was taken from the scene of a fire at a single-family home occupied by labor workers for Caroline's Farms on South Genoa Avenue on Monday, Dec. 17, according to Galloway Township Fire Chief Ron Garbutt. According to Garbutt, the victim was pulled from the two-story building by a labor worker who was next door at the time the fire broke out. The victim was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Campus. The nature and extent of his injuries were unknown. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. After a late night watching the Eagles-Cowboys game and an early morning taking his daughter to school, Stonewall Drive resident Scott Eisenlohr wanted to catch a quick nap Monday morning, Dec. 3. However, his nap was interrupted by the sound of a smoke detector and a fire in his home. "My home phone wasn't working, so I had to grab my cell phone and call 9-1-1," Eisenlohr said. " ... The Galloway Township Fire Department has a house fire on the 400 block of Fir Avenue under control at this hour, and no injuries have been reported. Volunteers from Bayview, Germania and Pomona fire departments, as well as Pomona Fire Rescue and the Galloway Township Police Department reported to the fire on the corner of Fir and McKinley avenues at 10:37 Tuesday morning, Nov. 6. Tim McKenna has been elected as the new fire chief in Galloway Township after current Chief Ron Garbutt chose not to run for re-election this year, Garbutt confirmed Wednesday morning, Sept. 5. Garbutt, who has served as Fire Chief for three years, will continue to volunteer with the Germania Fire Department, and will remain fire marshal when his current term expires at the end of the year. McKenna, the current Supervisor for Sewer Utilities in the Public Works Department, was elected to the position after running unopposed on Tuesday night, Sept. 4. He becomes Fire Chief effective Jan. 1, 2013. McKenna is currently the Assistant Chief in Oceanville, and previously served as the Oceanville Fire Chief for 11 years. He's been a volunteer …

Four Galloway Township residents were displaced due to two separate fires during the weekend, according to Galloway Township Fire Department Chief Rob Garbutt on Monday. The first fire occured on the 600 block of Biscayne Avenue at 12:49 p.m. on Friday, when an occupant awoke to find smoke in the house, Garbutt said. The Oceanville and Bayview Fire companies and the Absecon Fire Department were called the fight the blaze, which was discovered inside a wall of the house, according to Garbutt. 25 firefighters responded to the call and no injuries were reported, but the house was not habitable, Garbutt said. Firefighters from Baview and Oceanville fire companies have extinguished a trash truck fire on Society Hill Drive at this hour. The companies responded to the fire around 11:30 Wednesday morning, July 25. "It was a recycling trash-style pickup truck," Galloway Township Fire Chief Ron Garbutt said. "The load was on fire, so when we arrived we pushed it into the street, and we took care of it." No one was hurt in the effort to put out the blaze. Emotions were running high at the municipal complex Monday night as volunteer fire company members met with township officials to discuss controversial personnel decisions. Galloway Fire Chief and Fire Marshall Ron Garbutt said the township wanted to move the position of fire department administrative assistant out of the Galloway Township Fire Department location and into the construction office. The Galloway Township Fire Department encompasses Oceanville, Pomona, Bayview, Germania and South Egg Harbor volunteer fire companies.
