It's the first year the state is using its new School Performance Report system.
Just one of the Galloway Township School District’s schools met the target goal for Chronic Absenteeism in the School Performance Report released last week by Gov. Chris Christie’s office. The report issued this week replaces the outdated school report cards, the Christie Administration said. Reports now include data on college and career readiness, and place schools into peer groups. It also measures college preparedness in different ways, particularly through Chronic Absenteeism and the number of students enrolled in Algebra I at the middle school level. Terry Dougherty has been named Atlantic County Teacher of the Year.
The best teacher in Atlantic County comes from Galloway Township. Roland Rogers Elementary School Third Grade Teacher Terry Dougherty has been named Atlantic County Teacher of the Year, Galloway Township Superintendent of Schools Dr. Annette Giaquinto announced on Tuesday, April 9. Dougherty has been employed in the school district for 15 years. Her title as top educator in the county comes on the heels of her recognitions as Roland Rogers and Galloway School District teacher of the year. The Galloway Township Board of Education approved the $61,631,502 budget at its meeting Monday night, March 25 at the middle school by a vote that nearly mirrored the vote for the introduced budget earlier this month. The vote was 6-1, with Board President Ernest Huggard, Vice President George Schwenger and Board Members Madeline Avery, Suzette Cordero, Rich Dase and David Carmen voting in favor of the budget. Board Member Beverly Evensen was the lone dissenting voice, with Board Members John Knorr and Rosemary Hollway absent. Knorr and Hollway were also absent when the budget was introduced on March 5. Last year’s regional champion seeks a second consecutive trip to Scripps National Spelling Bee when he joins the Spelling Bee champions from the other Atlantic and Cape Mayb elementary and middle schools in the regional bee this weekend at Galloway Township Middle School. Ebose Eigbe, this year’s middle school Spelling Bee champion, joins 30 other champions for the South Jersey Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 23, in the middle school cafeteria. Previously, Patch reported Ebose Eigbe won the Galloway Middle School's bee, while fifth grader Alexander Rupsee won the Smithville Elementary School's bee. Of the 22 schools in the State of New Jersey that participated in Keep America Beautiful's National School Recycling competition, 20 were from Atlantic County, one of which finished first in the state and second in the country. Pleasantville Middle School was the top recycler in the State of New Jersey, and finished second in the national competition, known as "Recycle Bowl." Galloway Township Middle School and Cedar Creek High School also participated in the competition, sponsored by Nestle Waters North America (NWNA). The Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District's state aid is up almost $500,000.
The Galloway Township School District will receive over $300,000 in additional state aid compared to last year, according to figures released by Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 28. The school district is slated to receive $23,572,868 in total state aid for the 2013-14 fiscal budget, up from $23,271,052 last year. The total difference is $301,816. Meanwhile the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District, which includes Absegami High School, has been slated to receive $31,160,000, up from $30,670,338 last year. The total difference is $489,662.
