The Cedar Creek High School football team advanced to the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 final in its second year as a program, but fell to the defending champion Saturday afternoon at Rowan. Saturday's NJSIAA Group 2 South Jersey football final features the defending champion returning to the finals for the third year in a row and a team fairly new to playing football that was one game away from an undefeated season. No. 1 seed West Deptford meets No. 2 Cedar Creek in the championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Dec. 8. West Deptford returns to Rowan University for third-straight year as it eyes another Group 2 championship. West Deptford lost to Haddonfield in the finals in 2010, before defeating the Bulldawgs in a rematch last year. This time, there will be no Colonial Conference rival to compete against to become champions of Group 2, but there will be an equally opposing counterpart in the Cedar Creek Pirates. West …

The Absegami High School football team battled Atlantic City in near freezing temperatures Friday night, Nov. 16 in a game that saw strong defense by both teams in the first half. In the second half, an explosion of offense helped Atlantic City erase a three touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter. Fourth-seeded Atlantic City defeated No. 5 Absegami, 34-30, in an NJSIAA South Jersey Group V quarterfinal playoff matchup. The Vikings (7-2) will visit No. 1 Williamstown, a 41-6 winner over No. 8 Millville, in two weeks in the semifinals. One week after dropping a 33-25 decision to the Atlantic City High School football team at home, Absegami will go on the road to face the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs Friday night. The Braves were seeded fifth in the inaugural NJSIAA South Jersey Group V playoffs, and will face fourth-seeded Atlantic City Friday night, Nov. 16, 7 p.m., according to pairings released by the NJSIAA over the weekend. The Vikings' win over the Braves last Friday night in Galloway provided the difference in record and power points, as Atlantic City improved to 6-2 and finished with 128 points, and Absegami dropped to 5-3, finishing with 126 points. The Absegami High School football team rebounded from a tough loss last week with a 28-7 win over Egg Harbor Township in Cape-Atlantic League action Friday night, Oct. 12. Tyler Bing scored three of the Braves’ four touchdowns, including an 80-yard run in the third quarter after the Eagles posted their only score of the night. Bing also scored on runs of 13 yards in the second quarter and 14 yards in the final stanza. He rushed for a total of 174 yards. David Hood jumpstarted the scoring with a 13-yard run in the second quarter. Hood rushed for 142 yards. Quarterback Mike Dolan passed for 10 yards. The Holy Spirit High School football team shut out rival Absegami with two interception returns for touchdowns in Cape-Atlantic League action Friday night, Oct. 5. The Spartans improved to .500 with an 18-0 win over the Braves in Galloway Township. Jeff Steeb returned an interception 25 yards for the first touchdown in the first quarter, and A.J. Dawson returned an interception 42 yards in the fourth. Franco Rifici added a 36-yard field goal for the Spartans. The Absegami High School football team pulled out a late victory to pick up its third win of the season Friday night, Sept. 28. Nick Della Vecchia’s 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter capped a Braves’ effort in which it overcame a two-touchdown deficit to defeat Millville, 24-21, in Cape-Atlantic League action. Absegami took the early lead with a Mike Dolan 32-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Bing in the first quarter. Millville erased that lead with three touchdowns in the second quarter behind two touchdown runs from Rob Ennis, of 65 and 2 yards. The Absegami High School football team pulled off a come-from-behind victory in overtime to defeat Mainand Regional, 14-7, in Cape-Atlantic League play Friday night, Sept. 21. The win improved the Braves’ record to 2-1, while Mainland fell to 1-2. Mike Dolan was responsible for the winning score, carrying the ball in from 1 yard out in overtime. It capped a second half comeback after the Braves fell behind, 7-0, in the second quarter when the Mustangs’ Tom Bradway scored on a 14-yard run. For the second week in a row, David Hood scored two touchdowns for the Absegami High School football team. This week, it was in a winning effort. Absegami shut out Middle Township, 32-0, in Cape-Atlantic League action Friday night, Sept. 14. The Braves improved to 1-1 on the season. Tyler Bing also scored twice in the victory for the Braves, and Bashir Davis scored in the route. Many close games on the first night of the high school football season.
The Cedar Creek High School football team scored nearly 50 points in the program’s inaugural conference game, shutting out Ocean City Friday night. The Pirates defeated the Red Raiders, 47-0, in the season opener for both Cape-Atlantic League teams Friday night, Sept. 7 in Ocean City. The Pirates were up, 40-0, at halftime. Running back Gary Melton scored twice, first on a 5-yard run in the first quarter that served as the first score of the game, and later on a 19-yard run in the second that made the score 19-0. He ran for 35 total yards. Quarterback Damon Mitchell scored twice, once running and once passing. He took it in from 1 yard out in the second quarter.
