A Patch letter to the editor
The following column was submitted by New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd: As New Jerseyans continue to rebuild and recover from Superstorm Sandy, mold and its remediation have become a challenging issue for many residents and communities. It can cause property damage and be a health concern when it grows inside homes and is not properly dealt with. Exposure to mold can cause coughing or wheezing as well as irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and skin. To help homeowners ensure that their residences are cleaned and remediated properly, the New Jersey Department of Health created and released a pamphlet entitled Mold: Guidelines for New Jersey Residents. This pamphlet can help residents identify mold in their homes…

To the Editor: Despite policy differences, Republicans and Democrats generally agree that our government has a duty to its citizens to provide basic services for the community. As I read that Galloway Township may be laying off about a crew and a half from our already bare-bones Public Works Department and five officers from our already stretched-thin Police Department, I am worried that our municipal government will no longer be in a position to provide basic services to our people. We are in tough times, and we will all need to tighten our belts to weather this plight; however, our government has a responsibility to the citizens and taxpayers of Galloway. Keeping us safe, plowing streets from snow, and leaf collection are basic functions…

To the residents of Galloway: Although the election results have not been certified yet, I strongly feel the need to express my sincere and heart felt appreciation to all that voted in Tuesday's election. Galloway faces many issues that will be addressed between now and the end of 2013. By voting me as your new councilman, you have mandated that I serve you the people. I am humbled by this trust and faith you have placed in me and I take it very seriously. I have already taken steps to educate myself on the current State of the Township and hope to "hit the ground running" when I am sworn in. The numbers from the election show I received 6,964 votes and my opponent received 6,265. Most …

To the Editor: In spite of the destruction and heartache, Hurricane Sandy brought out the best in Atlantic County. Our area has come together over the last few days to help those affected by the storm. The support our state has received from people all over the country is overwhelming. Although the last thing on anyone's mind right now is politics, it is important to keep in mind that we have a very important election coming up on Tuesday, November 6. We need to join President Obama and continue moving our country forward. Locally, I hope you will come out to support my friends Colin Bell and Jim McElwee for Atlantic County Freeholder and Galloway Council, respectively. Colin and Jim are the people we need in office to bring new businesses…

To the Editor: As Election Day approaches, voters in Galloway have an important election as a result of Dennis Kleiner stepping down as Councilman. Mr. Kleiner relocated to Egg Harbor Township and we all wish him the Best of Luck in his new residence. That leaves one seat to be filled for the one year remaining on his 4 year term. John J. Mooney lll is the Republican appointed to fill out this seat in 2012. Not to be confused with the John W. Mooney who is the Commissioner of the Atlantic County Board of Election. The Democratic Candidate is Jim McElwee, not to be confused with Elliot McElwee (Heating and Cooling) which is a combination of John Elliot and Gary McElwee, owners of the company. I have been asked many times if I am related to …

To the Editor: As the former NJ Adjutant General's special executive assistant/advisor and Chief of Staff of the New Jersey Air National Guard, I remain keenly in tune to the initiatives that will ensure the safety and effectiveness of our armed forces. This is not only shaped by my own experience, but that of my colleagues and family – my brother is a former Adjutant General of the Kansas National Guard and my father one of the most decorated officers in the history of the institution. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter holds tremendous strategic value to our armed forces and allied partners. Our current fleet of fighters is aging out of its intended lifespan and must be replaced. The F-35 provides the most sophisticated technology and the …

The people we elect to serve on Council are in turn responsible for hiring the people who serve in the township administration. In the past two years, Galloway has become the laughingstock of Atlantic County due to the dysfunction on council and in the township administration because of these incidents: 1. firing of the township clerk and her subsequent lawsuit against all of Council and township administration 2. the prior mayor being forced out of office 3. three people churned through the township manager position before we finally got to the person serving currently 4. newly hired CFO attempted to extort “lunch money” from the township taxpayers while earning $105,000 per year in salary Before the circus of the past …

A question from the NJ Department of Community Affairs 2012/2013 Best Practices Inventory Questionnaire:“Given the potential fiscal impact of property tax appeals on municipalities, the Tax Assessor and CFO should review the status of filed appeals on a regular basis to determine their effect on future budgets and plan accordingly. "With input and approval from the governing body, this plan should include an evaluation of current assessment values and should consider setting aside an adequate estimated reserve to fund potentially successful state tax court appeals. Has your municipality considered a property reassessment/revaluation to counter the effect of successful residential tax appeals? "In answering this question, a yes answer …

Sprinkler systems save lives, reduce risk to firefighters

Wednesday, September 19, 2012
Letter to the Editor submitted by David Kurasz, Executive Director of the New Jersey Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board: Tragedy struck Berkeley, N.J. on the early morning of September 9, 2012, when a quick-moving fire claimed the life of an elderly man reported to be in his seventies and injured one firefighter. Despite heroic efforts by the fire department and first responders, the fire grew too intense too quickly, making it difficult to enter the residence. New Jersey has seen an increase in the number of house and apartment fires recently. The results are often catastrophic property loss and in this case a tragic loss of life. However, these tragedies can be prevented. Properly installed and maintained fire sprinklers control and …

To the Editor: Galloway citizens should be happy to see that Galloway Council has placed a resolution on the June 12 agenda to “call for the restoration of energy taxes to Municipalities and end the diversion of our municipal resources to cover State spending.” In addition to a resolution, Council can do more by addressing the issue directly with Governor Christie when he is in Galloway this week. The “energy” money in question is tax revenue, called energy tax receipts, collected from energy utilities for the use of public lands and the government services they receive, such as police and fire protection. The money once was collected by individual towns, but the state took over with the promise that the revenue would be returned to the …
