Lindsey Petrosh competed in Miss America last weekend.
An Egg Harbor City girl who grew up with the same dreams as a million other girls her age had the unique opportunity of putting the exclamation point on her career by living out that dream. Lindsey Petrosh competed in the Miss America pageant on Saturday night, Jan. 12, and although she didn’t win, she had plenty to take away from the experience. “It was a once in a lifetime experience that trumps everything I’ve ever done,” Petrosh said this week. “I grew up with the Miss America pageant in my backyard. After three days of Miss New Jersey events in Ocean City, Lindsey Petrosh of Egg Harbor City was crowned Miss New Jersey on Saturday night at the Music Pier in Ocean City. By winning, Petrosh not only will have the chance to compete at the Miss America Pageant, but also secured a $10,000 scholarship, among many other awards. Petrosh is a graduate of Rowan University. During the interview portion of the pageant, she had the chance to show a bit of her personality when she was asked whether it is better to be liked or respected. "I believe that if you're a good person and a kind person, and you live by the golden rule...to treat others the way you want to be treated, you will be liked and respected," she answered. Smithville resident Amanda Ross was crowned Miss New Jersey's Outstanding Teen on Saturday night at Milville Senior High School. "I was in complete shock," said Ross. "When people say follow their dreams...I feel my dream now." The 16-year-old high school junior competed with sixteen other teens from around the state in a competition that included a talent section, evening wear, a pre-competition interview with judges and a live on-stage question during the competition. For the talent portion of the competition, Ross performed a ballet variation en pointe. She has been dancing since she was two. Galloway's Cierra Kaler-Jones is headed to the 2012 Miss New Jersey pageant, vying for the chance to compete for Miss America, Shore News Today reports. Kaler-Jones won Miss Northern Lakes 2012, giving her a chance to compete in the state pageant. An Absegami High School graduate, Kaler-Jones won the Miss Atlantic County title in 2010 and embarked on promoting the performing arts. She paraded down the Atlantic City Boardwalk as Cat Woman and took first place in the talent competition of the Miss New Jersey pagaent.

The Miss America Pageant moved from Atlantic City to Las Vegas in 2006, but local fans can still see the Miss New Jersey Pageant in Ocean City. Twenty-three title holders from throughout the state will compete for the Miss New Jersey crown June 16 to 18. The pageant will be held on the Music Pier with shows starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. The winner of the Miss New Jersey Pageant will vie for the Miss America crown in January in Las Vegas. The Miss New Jersey Boardwalk Parade, featuring contestants from throughout the state is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 15. The parade begins at Sixth Street and ends at 14th Street.
