Galloway Township School District Eyes March Referendum Following Last Week's Defeat

Approval from the Education Commissioner should a second referendum fail is also on the table.

The Galloway Township Board of Education voted unanimously to look into holding a March referendum following the defeat of last week’s proposal at its meeting on Dec. 19 at the middle school. One board member even suggested going to the New Jersey Department of Education commissioner if the referendum is defeated again. “I called the NJSB and I spoke to an attorney and I spoke to a legislative director, and they said we don’t even have to go through a referendum for the stuff that needs to be done,” Board Member Bob Iannacone said. “We can just go right to the education commissioner and he can approve it without a referendum. I don’t want to have to do that. I want to go out to referendum, but if it fails again, I would suggest going to …

More from the Superintendent: Of note: The local budget has a 2% tax levy cap. Because of this cap we cannot include expenditures like roof replacements in the local budget without eliminating other mandated and critical programs, services, and materials. Every year the district has to make choices between instructional and non-instructional needs. We work to find balance in addressing both major…   more ›

State Grants Would Cover 57 Percent of the Cost of Projects Related to Greater Egg School District's Referendum

But not after February.

A week from today, voters will go to the polls vote on referendums for renovation projects in the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District, and district officials want the voters to know that approximately 57 percent of the $26.5 million cost for proposals related to its referendum will be covered by state grant funding. That equates to about $15,132,877. Therefore, the cost to taxpayers for the Greater Egg Harbor projects will be approximately $11.4 million, but the state grant funding will no longer be available to the school district after February. The annual tax increase for both Galloway Township and Hamilton Township would be $20 a year, at a rate of $1.67 a month for homes assessed at $100,000. In Egg Harbor City, the annual …

GEHR Super Says Different Ballots is Galloway's Prerogative

Both school districts have a referendum on Dec. 13. Voters can vote for both at the same location, but in different booths and on different ballots.

Galloway Township residents will be in a unique situation Dec. 13, as they will be asked to vote in two separate special elections, addressing a variety of construction projects on their local and regional school districts. Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District, which includes Absegami, Cedar Creek and Oakcrest high schools, had asked that both special elections be held on the same day when district officials learned that Galloway was looking to go to a referendum ballot on renovations at each of the district schools. Greater Egg Harbor had been toying with going out to referendum for the past couple of years and had hoped that, with the Dec. 13 election, both referendum questions would be on the same ballot for this one town only. …

Galloway Schools Referendum to Have Minimal Impact on Residents' Taxes

A resident whose home is worth $100,000 will see a raise in taxes of $14 a year.

The tax impact from the Dec. 13 referendum set forth by the Galloway Township Board of Education will be minimal, the board said at its meeting Monday night, Nov. 21, before approving the exact wording as it will appear on the ballot. According to Business Administrator Vickie Tomasco, those who own a home valued at $100,000 will see their taxes go up by $14 a year, while those paying $200,000 a year will see their taxes go up by $28 a year. “That comes out to about $2.50 a month,” Board Member John Knorr said. “Our children are worth more than $2.50 a month.” “If there are no renovations, it will actually end up costing the taxpayers more in the long run,” board member Rosemary Hollway said. Board President Ernest Huggard agreed with …

Five Things You Need to Know About Wednesday's Council Meeting

Concerns were raised about polling locations.

1. Councilman Tom Bassford raised concerns about the ability of the Sixth Avenue fire house to handle voting in next year's presidential election. "The Sixth Avenue fire house was very busy," he said. "(Next year) there's going to be mass confusion and it won't be fair to the voters." Deputy Mayor Tony Coppola said he had heard multiple concerns from voters about the polling location this year. Voting Districts 3 and 6 both voted at that location. The location registered 1,010 voters throughout the course of the day. It was one of four locations that had two districts report to it for this year's election. The Stockton Campus Ministry had 431 people between Districts 7 and 16; Assumption Regional Catholic School saw 626 voters between …

Keep Politics out of Galloway

Let me rephrase, the former clerk suggested using the Library in public hearing at the County, the Board did not want to entertain it. It would have been a perfect place for that district. I agree, Bayview is to small for two districts, but why wouldn't the County listen to her suggestion?   more ›

Galloway Township Council to Appoint New Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councilman Tonight

The positions will be on an interim basis, through the end of the year.

The Galloway Township Council will appoint a new mayor, a new deputy mayor and a new councilman at its meeting tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 9, according to the agenda posted on the township's website. One day after municipal elections that saw Republican Tony Coppola and Democrat Jim Gorman re-elected to council, and Republican Brian Tyrrell elected to council for the first time, the council will do a massive reconfiguration ahead of the official reorganization meeting in January. The council needs to reorganize early because former Mayor Keith Hartman was removed from his seat by state statute for missing four consecutive bi-weekly council meetings over an eight-week span. Hartman claims he missed the meetings due to threats against himself …

Why do they have to fill the seat at all for 3 meetings....its a waste of taypaying money. Hartman never took a salary. Now the republicans will most likely put someone in for three meetings and pay them a salary for it. Just save the money and wait till January. They are not missing much!   more ›
