"Boardwalk Empire" is a hit television show that shares the same name—and a few facts—as the nonfiction book that inspired the HBO series.
What's in a name? When it comes to comparing Nucky Johnson, Atlantic City's real-life politics and racketeering boss, to HBO's fictionalized "Nucky Thompson" in the series Boardwalk Empire, the answer is more than just the TV character's fictionalized name. Author Nelson Johnson, who literally wrote the book on the real Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, says HBO's Terence Winter has said the fictionalized character created for the TV version of Boardwalk Empire is 70 percent drawn from Johnson's 2002 book of the same name. Nicodemo Scarfo Jr. and Salvatore Pelullo were among a group of defendants who went before a federal judge in Camden on Friday afternoon, Jan. 20. Scarfo, of Galloway Township, and Pelullo were among 13 who were arrested on racketeering charges in November of last year. No trial date was set at Friday’s Status Update Conference, but the next conference was set for March 9, said Matthew Reilly, deputy public affairs officer at the United States Attorney’s Office/District of New Jersey. Reilly said the discussion at Friday’s conference before Judge Robert Kugler centered on discovery, meaning the sides exchanged evidence to be used in the upcoming trial. Scarfo was arrested Tuesday morning at his home in Galloway Township, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman and Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer said. He faces 25 counts, each carrying with it anywhere between a five-year and 30-year maximum jail sentence. They were also accused of other offenses, including the illegal takeover of a publicly traded company.
